The Durga Sahasra Nama Stuthi (or Stotram) is a sacred hymn that praises the Goddess Durga with 1,000 names, attributes, and epithets. This hymn is believed to destroy sins, remove obstacles, provide protection from evil, and bestow wealth, peace, and prosperity on devotees who chant it, especially during auspicious times like Navaratri. The stotram originates from a conversation between Narada and Skanda (Kartikeya). Sage Narada, eager to gain knowledge and wisdom, asks Skanda to share a stotram that can destroy sins and fulfill desires. In response, Skanda narrates the story of how Himavan, the king of mountains, prayed to Goddess Durga, who then blessed him with the knowledge of this sacred hymn. This dialogue introduces the significance of the stotram, which is said to grant protection from evil, remove obstacles, and bestow blessings on devotees.
Chandi Puja ritual involves the chanting of verses from the Durga Saptashati, a 700-verse Hindu scripture detailing Goddess Durga's battles with demons, while making offerings into a sacred fire (Homa/Havan). The ritual includes purification, invocation of deities like Ganesha and the Navagrahas (nine planets), the Kalash Sthapana (pot installation), and specific pujas for married women (Suvasini Puja) and couples, culminating in offerings and blessings for well-being, protection, and success. While Durga Pooja and general homas invoke Devi in a gentler form, Chandi Homa is a higher-tantric and Vedic level of invoking her destructive and transformational powers. It is more intensive in nature and requires deep scriptural accuracy, which is why it is not casually done in homes without trained pandits..
